FAQs

What is Latin America Mission's official mission statement?
The Latin America Mission is an international community of men and women who, motivated by their love of the Lord Jesus Christ and in obedience to His commands, encourage, assist and participate with the Latin Church in the task of building the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latin world and beyond.

What are its objectives?
The LAM works in evangelism and discipleship, so that the name of Jesus Christ will be praised by more and more men and women, and believers will grow in their faith to serve God more fully in their local church and throughout the world.

In what kinds of ministries do LAM missionaries serve?
LAM's service takes many forms: from friendship evangelism to theological education; medical work to youth camps; church planting to children-at-risk work; office management to micro-enterprise development; personal counseling to emergency response.

How does LAM approach ministry?
The Mission is:

  • Biblical - Following a common statement of faith and Jesus' command to go into all the world and preach the Gospel.
  • Inclusive - Ministering alongside all sectors of evangelical Christianity.
  • Holistic - Focusing on service to every aspect of a person's life.
  • Empowering - Equipping the church and training leaders.
  • Innovative - Valuing creativity and taking risks in ministry.
  • Partnership oriented - Submitting to national associate ministries.
  • Committed to excellence - Applying administrative integrity and quality missiological principles.
  • Strategic - Working where the need is greatest, favoring ministries that multiply the action of evangelism, training and networking.

How do LAM missionaries relate to local leaders?
We seek to cooperate with God's call to the Latin American Church, by working in conjunction with and subject to national leadership. Each missionary works under the direction of a local grassroots ministry. There are no field directors in the LAM. We relate directly to national church outreach, assigning human and material resources to diverse national ministry associates. We work where the need is greatest, favoring strategic ministries that will multiply the action or task of evangelism, training or networking.

How long has LAM existed?
The LAM has a rich history of ministry. Harry and Susan Strachan committed to service in the Latin world, particularly in urban areas, in 1921.

Where does LAM work?
LAM has missionaries working in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Venezuela and the United States.

What countries is LAM expanding into?
The Mission has ministry partners seeking workers in Chile, El Salvador, Haiti and Nicaragua.

How are the mission and its ministries funded?
LAM is a faith mission. Missionaries depend on God’s direction and the faithful giving of supporting churches and individuals to carry out their ministry.

In addition to long-term work, does LAM offer short-term ministries?
Yes. The Spearhead program in Mexico City offers front-line hands-on ministry with local churches for 2 or 14 months with training in language, culture, and ministry skills. LAM also sponsors summer programs in Brazil and Honduras. In addition, as we look at your skills, background, desires and time-frame, LAM explores options for appropriate ministry with national partners and missionaries.

What role do women have in the mission?
From the key role of Susan Strachan, wife of LAM's founder, to the present, God has given women a significant part in ministry. The mission is a community of men and women in which each works in the ministry to which God has called and gifted that person. For married couples, both are accepted as missionaries, not as a missionary and his wife.

What denomination is the Mission?
LAM is an interdenominational mission. Our missionaries are united by their common evangelical faith to serve God and His people. Each year all missionaries reaffirm their adherence to the mission’s doctrinal statement.

How are the gifts of the Spirit viewed?
We believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit motivate, equip and empower the Church for the mission of the Body of Christ. The LAM rejoices in and affirms the expression of all of the gifts, while recognizing that extreme positions have resulted in divisiveness. Respect must be given to all the Spirit's gifts as we carry out our mission to build the church. But great care must be exercised in not giving any gift a more important role than Scripture does.
