El Salvador is geographically the smallest country in Central America, yet it has a larger economy than most of its neighbors. Known as the Land of Volcanoes, the country has frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. It is a popular surfing destination. Guanacos — as Salvadorians are sometimes called — have also given the world a tasty gastronomical export in the pupusa, a typical food similar to are pas.

EL Salvador suffered a 12-year civil war, which cost the lives of 75,000 people and was brought to a close in 1992 when the government and leftist rebels signed a treaty outlining military and political reforms.
