Honduras is located in Central America between Guatemala and Nicaragua. Originally part of the Mayan civilization and then part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became an independent nation in 1921. After decades of predominantly military rule, a freely elected civilian government cam to power in 1982.
Honduras is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, with a small but growing Protestant population. It's economy is dependent on agriculture, remittances sent from expatriates in the United States, and a growing textile sector. Significant tourist attractions include Mayan ruins and the world's second-largest coral reef, which it shares with Belize. It is also home to some popular comfort foods like baleadas, a thick wheat tortilla piled with mashed fried beans and other ingredients.
One of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, Honduras struggles with roughly 65 percent of its people living below the national poverty line. Hurricane Mitch wreaked havoc on the country in 1998, destroying roads and property over a large portion of the country and killing thousands. Though Honduras' economy has slowly rebounded since then, the disaster drove tens of thousands of Honduras out of the country as refugees.
