El Salvador is located on the Pacific coast of Central America, bordering Guatemala and Honduras.

Known as the Land of Volcanoes, El Salvador has frequent and sometimes destructive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Spanish is the official language. About 84% of the population is Roman Catholic. A 12-year civil war, which cost the lives of 75,000 people, was brought to a close in 1992 when the government and leftist rebels signed a treaty outlining military and political reforms.
