The Republic of Paraguay is totally landlocked in the center of South America. Its only connection with the ocean is via the Parana River which passes through Argentina.
Paraguay has had a succession of governments affected by politics and instability, and has a long history of wars and isolation from its neighboring countries. For more than three decades (1954 - 1989) Paraguay was led by a tyrannical military government, which hindered the growth of democratic institutions.
This legacy has produced endemic corruption at all levels. For example, it is estimated that 60% of the cars in Paraguay have been stolen from Argentina and Brazil. Spanish is the official language in the country for business, but the one most used is Guaraní.
The national leadership is crying out for a revival. The biggest needs are in the areas of family, leadership training, and education.
