Heir of the rich Inca tradition, Peru has a long and prominent history in the colonization of South America. Situated on the Pacific coast, it was used by the Spanish conquerors as a center for government for a great part of the region.
The language most spoken is Spanish, but about the population speaks Quechua and Aimara. Peru is predominantly Roman Catholic, but also has a mix of many pagan beliefs.
Peru has experienced serious political instability. For example, in 1992 the Constitution was suspended and bold reform programs implemented by President Fujimori. This made significant progress in curtailing guerilla activity and drug trafficking. Blamed for corruption at the end of his term, Fujimori abandoned the country and the people voted in a new president.
