Located on the northern coast of South America, Venezuela was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of “Gran Colombia” in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador).
Most of the population speaks Spanish, but there are more than 40 languages used by the other inhabitants: Amerindians, Arabs, Chinese, Jews, and Anglos. 87% of the population is Roman Catholic.
High profile issues in Venezuela include: drug-related conflicts along the Colombian border, an increase in drug addiction internally, irresponsible mining operations that put the indigenous population in danger.
