What We Do

Steps to Service with LAM

LAM values the integrity of a comprehensive application process wherein a candidate's individual call is confirmed by scripture and the wise counsel of leadership. What does that mean? It means the components of the application process help us to get to know candidates and vice-versa. It also means we address the needs of the whole person. We evaluate the spiritual, physical, psychological, emotional, mental, social, familial and social aspects of candidates. Jump to short term section

LONG-TERM

The following are components of the application process for long-term service with LAM

Preliminary Information Form (PIF)
Think of it as a 10 or 15 minute interview. LAM can send you a form or you can access an on-line version at here.

Formal Application Papers
These include questions on personal background, employment history, vision for ministry, doctrinal convictions, etc. We will also ask for your academic transcripts, resume, photograph and perform a background check.

Orientation
We require active participation in the full orientation by candidates before acceptance as a missionary. This normally happens twice a year: during late January and late June. Orientation will acquaint you with our history, our vision for the future, our approach to ministry and the nuts-and-bolts of service with the LAM. We think you'll find it interesting, informative and rewarding. Intense, perhaps, but enjoyable.

Interviews
Our Member Care staff, Ministries Department and Personnel Department will consult with you during Orientation. We may also require other telephone or face-to-face interviews.

Recommendations
We will send six recommendation forms to be submitted by pastors, church leaders, employers, friends, etc.

Upon completion of all of these steps, your application will be reviewed by the Personnel Department and President of the Mission. Once candidates are appointed as missionaries with Latin America Mission, these steps must be taken before they can begin active service:

Support Raised
You will be expected to raise the specified support, travel expense, language school, orientation and other costs of induction into your work. LAM requires that 100% of the agreed-upon level of financial support be raised prior to leaving for your field of service.

Psychological Evaluations
LAM administers a battery of tests to help you identify strengths and weaknesses within your personality, your marriage as well as your preparation for cultural adaptation. These tests are not used to "screen" applicants, rather, they are used to help applicants understand themselves and how they may best serve the Lord.

Ministry Assignment/Work Agreement
LAM relates directly to national church outreach, assigning human and material resources to diverse ministry associates. Each missionary, then, works under the direction of a local grassroots ministry. A work contract will be made between LAM and the national organization overseeing your ministry. We work to confirm a "good fit."

Medical Clearance
We require a physical examination for you and each member of your family.

Individual Training Issues
Preparation needs differ for each candidate. LAM may also require additional theological education for a particular area of service, specific ministry training, individual counseling, language school, etc.

SHORT-TERM

The following are components of the application process for short-term service with LAM

Preliminary Information Form (PIF)
If you are interested in exploring opportunities for short-term service with LAM, you may write us for information and the PIF, or you may find the PIF on the website (www.lam.org) and apply electronically. This form will not obligate you in any way, but will help us to begin to explore your interest in short-term service. It will help us ascertain your skills, interest, and provide basic information. On the basis of your PIF, we will consider our ministry needs and match you up with your interests, gifts and abilities. If you match up, you will be contacted and encouraged to complete the rest of the application.

Formal Application
The application consists of a questionnaire, a request for your personal statement of doctrinal conviction, a medical questionnaire, and a Statement of Conduct. You will be requested to get a police clearance, and obtain 3 references. At the time you mail in your application, you will need to send two snapshots and the application fee.

Acceptance
Your application will be reviewed by at least two people, the Short-term Missions Coordinator and the Mobilization Coordinator. One other person may review it. Once it has been reviewed, you will be notified of your acceptance by phone, e-mail, or in a formal letter. During the application process, the Short-term Missions Coordinator may begin to explore with you possibilities of ministry, giving you 2 or more options to be praying about. A complete description will not be available until after your official acceptance. Once you are accepted, more detail of the ministries can be discussed.

Mailings
Various pieces will be mailed, including an insurance form, an emergency contact sheet, a book to help you prepare spiritually, and a Preparation Handbook with practical information. Later as e-mail and calls increase, you will be given more information concerning your ministry, the dates for orientation and debrief, a list of costs, and how you should handle travel arrangements.

Orientation
In June we have an orientation session here in Miami. At that time we offer valuable information on the Latin culture and church, the language, and things you will need in order to function during your short-term experience. This is mandatory. A time of debrief at the end of your experience helps you to return to the U.S. and helps you look forward to sharing your experience with friends, family and members of your church.
