- How long is the process of getting an assignment?
The answer to this question depends on a couple of factors. If you have availability to a Fax machine all but the police clearance, the photos, and the check for the application fee can be faxed. Your references can even fax the reference sheets. Another factor is whether you have access to the Internet. You can fill out the Preliminary Information Form electronically. However, some pages that are in the packet we mailed to you must be completed and mailed in to LAM. - Do I get to select my ministry?
You will be given a couple of options to consider. After prayer and thought, you can obtain more information about those options, or you can ask about other possibilities. After several e-mails and or phone conversations, you can have some input into where you feel God is leading you to serve. The Short-term Missions Coordinator and the Ministries personnel work together to suggest service sites for you. - What types of ministries are available?
There are opportunities to serve in the areas of camping, street children, construction, health care, evangelism, counseling, or physical tasks (dishwashing, painting, cleaning). - Can I work outside my area of training?
Some people prefer to work outside their area of training during a short-term experience, particularly if language is a problem. Others want to use skills or training. Language may be the factor that influences whether or not that can happen. - Can you place me if I do not speak Spanish or Portuguese?
Yes. Though it is very important to have a basic understanding of language, it is not mandatory. You can be placed with a missionary who speaks both languages. Knowing that frustration often develops when a person is unable to communicate, we suggest that the applicant get a basic introduction to Spanish or Portuguese.
